Dawn, well her name was Dawnrunner, she’s Indian. Never found out what tribe. I did like her though, but I guess I was not good enough for her. Then there was Xavier. What kind of name is that anyway? He always creeped me out. They used to be fun, then it all changed. We were kids then. We helped set dynamite in the tunnels for the dam. I took a hit in the head and was out for a week. I don't know when it happened while I was out, but when I saw them again, they were different. Quin started being really nice, offering me stuff... as if I couldn’t get it myself. He treated me like a baby... Always tryin' to teach me to be somebody. He talked more and more about code and duty. I started to hate it, and him. Dawn still never really talked to me, so nothing really changed. I did notice the way she acted around X. Maybe I was jealous. He was really different, he changed then most. I asked about it but my dad said to leave it alone. Everyone did. I even heard the word "Miracle" tossed around a few times. Xavier changed for sure. I couldn’t see it but I could feel it. He still looked sick, but bigger at the same time. I would see him stare sometimes, I didn’t like the way he looked at me. I was bigger than him, but I could never bring myself to bully him like I did the other kids. The way he looked at mealways changed my mind. Last I heard, he and Quin went off to Europe to fight the Germans. That’s about it. I don’t know if they made it... Is that good enough, doc? I don't want to go back to my room any more. I feel fine, honest. No... No more meds, please! Not two pinks." (gulping sound) I feel funny on the pinks... " -excerpt from Dr. Jenny Hart's audio journal, January 15th, 1952 |
